The gut-skin axis. The impact of selected intestinal dysfunctions on skin condition
Abstract
The skin is a specialized organ whose health largely depends on internal factors, including the condition of the intestines. Due to its metabolic, immune, and digestive functions, this part of the digestive system affects the entire body. The most common issues include acne vulgaris, rosacea, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, keratinization disorders, and abnormal water balance in the skin. The intestines have a profound impact on the skin's appearance, and the strong connection within the gut-skin-brain axis opens a new perspective on the interdependencies between these systems. This paper discusses the links between intestinal dysfunctions—such as microbiota disorders, celiac disease, food intolerances, and parasitic infections—and the occurrence of common dermatological conditions. A holistic approach allows cosmetologists not only to alleviate symptoms but also to address the root causes of skin problems. Utilizing this knowledge enables effective dermatosis therapy and integrated actions covering both professional treatments and the restoration of internal homeostasis.
