Presentation Title:

Ayurveda and psychodermatology: Healing the mind-skin connection

Abstract

Introduction: Psychodermatology emphasizes the intricate relationship between the mind and skin, where emotional and psychological stress frequently manifest as skin disorders. Ayurveda, with its holistic approach, addresses this mind-skin connection by balancing the body, mind, and emotions. Ayurvedic therapies such as adaptogens, dietary modifications, yoga practices and Panchakarma procedures like Shirodhara and Nasyam are employed to manage stress-related skin issues like acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
Material and Methods: This research draws upon Ayurvedic texts, scientific literature, and clinical studies to assess the psychodermal impact of skin disorders . It also explores Ayurvedic approaches to address these issues.
Results: The findings highlight that patients suffering from skin disorders often experience physical discomfort, mental stress, and socioeconomic embarrassment, which further aggravate their conditions. Skin diseases like psoriasis and acne go beyond cosmetic concerns and can lead to anxiety, depression, and other psychological challenges that significantly affect patients day to day life.
Conclusion and Discussion: The psychodermal aspect of skin diseases is often underappreciated. Greater awareness of the psychological comorbidities associated with these conditions, coupled with Ayurvedic treatment approaches that address both the mind and body, can enhance the quality of life for patients.
