Title: The effectiveness of oral propranolol for the treatment of ulcerated hemangioma in Vietnamese infants: A case series

Abstract

Introduction: Infantile hemangioma is the most common tumor in infancy. Although it is a benign tumor and can be self-limited, hemangioma in infants can cause many serious complications, especially ulcer complications (16%). A non-invasive treatment is needed for this condition. Propranolol has recently been used as a choice of treatment in ulcerated hemangioma.

Presentation of case: We will analyze in detail the practical effectiveness of oral propranolol in the successful treatment of three cases of ulcerative hemangioma. All of them were found in infants under 5 months old with rapidly progressing ulcerative lesions in the genital-buttocks area. The pediatric patients had full organ assessment tests performed before using oral propranolol and the progression of lesions was recorded by regular imaging. The results obtained were that all three cases responded very well to oral propranolol. The lesions healed quickly by 80-90% after 2 weeks and no side effects were reported.

Discussion: Large ulcers often cause a lot of pain and are difficult to reconstruct. Propranolol is effective in controlling pain and also prevents the progression of damage, helping ulcers heal quickly

Conclusion: Propranolol is an effective treatment for infants with rapidly progressing ulcerated hemangioma.
