Title: Safety and efficacy of combination 10 sessions of Q - switched Nd: YAG 1064nm and pulsed dye Laser 595 nm on Melasma treatment among chinese women in Malaysia

Abstract

Background: Melasma, a facial hyperpigmentation disorder, results from various photomechanical factors. Effective treatment addresses both hyperpigmentation and vascular anomalies to improve therapeutic outcomes and safety. This study assesses the safety and efficacy of combining Q-switched Nd: YAG 1064 nm and Pulsed Dye Laser 595 nm in Chinese individuals with Fitzpatrick skin types III-IV.

Method: This retrospective study included twenty-seven Chinese female patients with melasma undergoing ten sessions of treatment at three-week intervals from January 2022 to December 2022. Two groups of credentialed doctors evaluated clinical photography to assess the mMASI score at the first, fifth, and tenth sessions.

Results and Discussion: Statistical analysis revealed a significant reduction in mMASI scores across visits (F (1.62, 43.60) = 24.24, p < 0.001, partial ηp2 =0.47). Mean mMASI scores decreased from the first visit (8.74 ± 2.95) to the fifth (6.33 ± 2.60) and tenth (6 ± 3.21) sessions, with significant differences between the first and fifth (p < 0.001) and first and tenth (p<0.001) sessions. However, no significant difference was observed between the fifth and tenth sessions (p>0.05). Adverse reactions were minimal, with most patients experiencing no adverse effects (n=19, 70.4%). A minority reported redness (n=1, 3.7%) and hyperpigmentation (n=7, 25.9%) post-treatment.

Conclusion: The combination of Q-switched Nd: YAG 1064 nm and Pulsed Dye Laser 595 nm over ten sessions is safe and effective for Chinese female patients with Melasma and Fitzpatrick skin types III-IV.
