Hair loss is a quite common condition observed in both men and women. Pattern hair loss also known as androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss. Although androgenetic alopecia does not significantly affect physical health, it can have negative impact on the mental health and quality of life of the patient. To date there have only been 2 FDA approved medications, minoxidil and finasteride, but their effects are often unsatisfactory. Stem cell-based regenerative medicine is a new era in medicine which has shown potential for hair regrowth and follicle repair. The therapeutic effects of stem cells are due to their paracrine and trophic effects which are due to their secretions (secretome). Stem cell-based therapy approaches include stem cell transplant, stem cell- derived conditioned medium and stem cell-derived exosomes. In this review, the use of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell derived cytokines and growth factors in the management of Androgentic alopecia will be discussed. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell derived cytokines and growth factors should be more used as an alternative to conventional therapies in the management of Androgentic alopecia due to their positive outcomes.
